Statement | Ulrika Holmlund

Swedish born Ulrika Holmlund is a Melbourne-based visual artist working with single and multi-channel video installation, sculpture, digital photography and performance. Starting out creating sculptural work using found and used objects, wax, plaster, latex and hair she created frail objects with a sense of bodily presence. Holmlund moved on to video as a tool to document and capture the life span of the sculptures created. Over the past few years, she has used the moving image to investigate various cultural constructions including gender identity, sexuality, and voyeurism. Holmlund uses her camera as a device, into which she unloads her performative mini-dramas. The basic principles explored within Holmlund's practice include cultural identity and the empty world of consumerism, both concepts creating a body of work that resonates with a sense of social isolation and alienation. Holmlund's efforts question the values of contemporary society, especially in relation to female identity, the video image, and the role of spectator, producing provocative and arresting work.

An honours graduate of Media Arts at RMIT University, Ulrika is currently acting as the Exhibition Co-Ordinator of 69 Smith Street Gallery, an artist-run initiative in Melbourne's Fitzroy.
