Statement | Talice Lee

In my recent works, I consider ways in which the body interacts with the layers surrounding it, from the physicality of clothing, dwelling, and landscape to the environment of fear that is cultivated in American society. I am interested in protecting and hiding the body using materials like packing materials and camouflage that I translate into works for interaction. What is the supposed natural environment of the body? Every place where I exist has an affect on my experiences. The intention in my work is to create video while considering the different layers of environment for the body.

Considerations on fear are prevalent in my work. Fear and the need to feel safe are still driving parts of my parents' lives having grown up in Taiwan during World War 2. These needs have made me more aware of similar sentiments happening in current cultures, and I have a physical reaction to these feelings that I contain in my works. I think of my videos as moments in life that I want to manipulate, suspend, and heighten the experience in which they exist. I make t hese pieces about protection as tools for myself, things I use in opposition to the elements of fear that we are surrounded by. At the same time, I wonder and wander through the different environments in which I place myself, the possibilities of landscape extending to the exteriors of the universe.

Freeing and Fleeing, 4:12min, 2006
The drifting and spinning of a female figure hanging from a tree is the main subject of this video. A soft netting of tiny figures covers the top of the figure, adding to the mysterious nature of the piece.   The lullaby-like sound adds a sense of ghostliness while enhancing the suspension and elongated duration of the actions.

Shiftings in Errant Operations, 2:43min, 2007
This occurrence in an ice arena involves the jerky movement of a large, mysterious object on wheels. The repetition of the actions on ice and erratic camera movement are accompanied by altered sound. These elements combine to intensify the abstracted visual motion that builds up to points of revelation.

Waiting for Snow, 5:46min, 2006
A passage in time that shows the artist in a vast landscape using arctic military camouflage to anticipate the falling of snow. The eloquent imagery of the material and the natural sounds intensify the experience. The video is a dualistic confrontation and collapse as the artist gives in to nature by way of a synthetic material.
