Statement | Shannon Carpenter

My work is process-based, in that the process of making it is a way for me to organize and then honestly understand my own thoughts and feelings about the subject.

In that sense, I make the work for me.

Yet I believe that "art" should do more than serve the artist, or look good. Art should help us grow. It is in the sharing of my work with an audience that it, for me, becomes art.

My work keeps me honest about how (sometimes) desperately I yearn to be safe, understood and loved; sharing it reminds me to take risks.
