Statement | Marian Tubbs

My conceptual practice involves themes of psychology, fantasy and notions of Australian culture. The physicality of the work is disparate and the tools change but mostly I use video and painting. The work is lo-fi and reflects on work by video artist pioneers of the 1960s. The installations I create are made only by; the artist, one actor and one camera as I posit them to be accented by ideas, rather than spectacular production. My practice takes reference from a wide range of writers on the human condition such as Samuel Beckett and Emily Dickinson as well as theorists Julia Kristeva, Judith Butler and Amelia Jones.

Marian's upcoming solo exhibition at Kings ARI   is a video and painting installation starring Australian actor Catherine Terracini. It examines the actor's psychological experience of time alone in a dry Australian bush setting. This work is about the tentative distance between solitude-induced clarity and madness.
