Statement | Maren Juell Kristensen
In all of my work I am concerned about space, both literary and metaphorically. I wish the viewer to navigate between specific angles of view, barriers and juxtapositions. I am concerned with a state of mind when perception of reality is uncertain, and by cropping or obstructing the viewer's point of view I wish to highlight an expectation of a narrative where the core is doubt and ambivalence.
'We walked miles for you' consists of three ways of walking in parades from my cultural heritage (Norway). Myth, both as represented by media and in traditional folklore interests me from the point of confusion regarding actual content and how the wish to participate and belong might create meaning where there otherwise was none.
In the work 'it's so lovely' I use filmic clichés to convey a sort of adolescent daydream where horror is unravelled and covered up at the same moment in time - maybe there was none? Maybe you saw it on TV yesterday and just forgot?
'Undertoad' is based on a notion of presumed childhood innocence, misunderstandings and fear. The word Undertoad comes from 'The world according to Garp' by John Irving and is the sons misunderstanding of his father's warnings that he must watch out for the undertow while bathing in the sea.
