Statement | Claudine Kraan

Film, already linked to popular culture, subjectivity, social class, identity and perceived reality can be highly suggestive of human nature when taken out of its original context. I seek strong visuals about identity and relationships. There is an old theory that our world was created half finished and as a result there are voids opening and gaps not fully real, all the while our ultimate versions of ourselves haunt us in this “unfinished universe”. In order to understand our world, ourselves, we require that crucial dimension offered only by cinema. According to theorist Slavoj Zizek, if you are seeking the truth within reality, more reality than itself, then look into cinematic fiction. This is the basis of my practice.
