Statement | Anina Schenker

Although Anina Schenker does not limit herself and her work to any one medium, video and photography have emerged as her preferred fields of activity in recent years. She also works with writing and texts in various media.

Anina Schenker's video and photo work has two basic components: the explicit referencing of the person/personality of the artist and a strong performance element. The influence of these two elements is not always equal, resulting in two distinct groups of works. In one, the artist investigates the cultural, social, and subjectively perceived aspects of personal identity through the emblematic use of her own person. Delving into her own past, Anina Schenker searches through private archives and aspects of her life for structures and points of reference. In the process she blurs the border between private and public and probes the differences between what is relevant to an individual and what is common memory. Although Anina Schenkers's works often feel like performances they do not address questions of corporeality or feminist issues; rather they investigate questions of identity, pure and simple. The artist turns herself into an object of observation in order to explore and read emotions and states of being, i.e. individual traits and personality structures. In a certain sense it is a search for the counterpart reflected in the mirror.
